I was determined to start my Virtual Assistant business for completely free.
However, I also wanted to purchase my domain (website URL) NOW so I wouldn’t have to rebrand later.
I know they say your website doesn’t have to match your business name, but I want it to be as easy as possible for people to remember me. I wanted EVERYTHING to be the same. Easy to remember because nothing isn’t the name of my company.
DavisVirtualSupport.com (and my matching email address 😎) cost me just $12 bucks. I used G suite to purchase my domain because I’m a Google fan. I use many Google services, and having them attached to my business is very convenient.
Okay, here’s a tidbit of info you might want to hear up front. I chose a premium version of G Suite so I can have an email address that matches my domain. So in 2 weeks I’ll start being charged $12 a month to maintain my email address.
And after the charges for my domain and email address, I really wasn’t going to pay for my actual website! So, after a bit if research and asking around, I found out how to have my domain cake and eat a free website, too!
Read on to see how you can connect your domain to your free website plan!
- Purchase your domain. (I used G Suite)
- Set up a free website. (I used WordPress. No complaints yet!)
- Copy your custom website URL (Mine is DavisVirtualSupport.WordPress.com)
- Go to your domain hosts administration dashboard (I googled how to find it in G Suite)
- Find the section on domain forwarding (ask Google nicely for directions)
- Paste your free websites URL where indicated and make aure to save the changes.
TaDa! Free website with your purchased domain!
Now, when people type in the URL you purchased, the will be automatically redirected to your free website without a hitch!
Yes, your website will say things like “Make your own free website!” “This website is on WordPress!” and other things, but, honestly, who cares?
If your business grows to where you can justify the expense of a paid website, make it a client appreciation event and send out emails letting all your clients know you’ve upgraded your website and it’s all thanks to their support!
But until then, enjoy your free website on your purchased domain!
